Rough notes
Chapter 3: Libya
- Money that was collected will be transferred to a bank acc in Dubai, Khartoum or Istanbul through the Hawala system
- Difficult to trace
- HN groups, UN agencies, celebrities etc. were contacted - but they were treated differently unlike fair-skinned American hostages
- Eritrean diaspora keeps paying for ransom. Ppl say paying ransom is not good, but what to do when no one helps (even UN agencies who are supposed to be helping them?)
- No wonder that human trafficking is well and alive until now, literally no one is stopping them FFS
- These refugees could become property of someone else just because their smuggler gambled them away in a casino…
- With social media, sometimes smugglers would post videos, etc. on Facebook, Whatsapp etc. asking for ransom
- OK this is totally fucked up - and I have zero idea this is happening…
Chapter 4 - Ain Zara and Abu Salim: New Life and New Death
Chapter 8: Tunis; The Last Days of Rome
- UNHCR and IMO run inefficient meetings under Mixed Migration Group - money grabs
- Funding towards detention centers, coast guards
- MSF refused to take EU funding incl individual countries - response to the EU-Turkey migration deal
- Senior UNHCR official saying not to trust refugees? Wtf
Chapter 9: Abu Salim: Love Finds a Way
- refugees find it difficult to divulge their feelings cos they were used to keeping their mouth shut to protect themselves
- women were given priority; men can go w them if a couple - marriage of convenience
- ppl paid to get smuggled out to Tunisia: but turns out it was illegal to work there, racism was rampant
- in Libya: ppl picked up smoking, children swearing - this is cos they absorbed what they saw - how the guards acted. Idk we should empathize more I guess. These ppl didnt make a conscious choice to act terribly
Chapter 10: Khoms Souq Al Khamis: A Market of Human Beings
- Khoms Souq al Khamis - disembarkation center
- Hold sim cards in their mouths, damn
- Turned into labor camp
- 2020 it was closed, UNHCR moved them to Tripoli
- Wtf man all UNHCR does is shuffling around refugees from one center to another instead of settling them in Europe or smth… fuck this shit man
Chapter 11: Sierra Leone: The Temple Run and the Left-Behind Women
